Equifax Data Breach: The FTC Never Talks about Ongoing Investigations but its Talking about This One

You’d have to be living under a rock to have missed the news about Equifax’s data breach. And, let’s hope you do, and that you’re not one of the 143 million U.S. consumers whose personal data may have been compromised.

But, did you know the Federal Trade Commission is already scrutinizing the situation?

“In light of the intense public interest and the potential impact of this matter, I can confirm that FTC staff is investigating the Equifax data breach,” FTC spokesman Peter Kaplan said, as reported by Reuters.

While it’s not uncommon for the FTC to investigate companies, it is uncommon for them to admit to doing so before the conclusion of an investigation. This highly unusual admission highlights the severity and breadth of the incident.
