When to Train During the Technology Migration Process  

There are several steps involved in a technology migration, and they include envisioning, planning, developing, and deploying. While employee training should be considered at the very beginning of the migration process (envisioning), personnel will most likely not begin training until the end of step three (developing). The development stage is very involved and requires IT teams to test and debug new systems. After system testing and validation has been completed, then it is time to begin training employees and administrators in the use of those systems. Microsoft’s Managing the Migration Process stated,

“As soon as possible (after testing and validation), begin training administrative staff, support personnel, and key users. In addition to training the individuals who will be performing the migration and administering servers, you’ll probably want to provide end-user training and support. Web developers will also benefit from training on subjects such as creating ASP-based applications and using FrontPage to publish Web pages.”

The last phase of the migration process (deploying) also has a training component to it. In this stage, administrators and workers should continue to be trained until proficiency in new technologies is achieved. Usually, a Logistics Manager will oversee this training, whereas general IT teams may oversee initial training.
